Meet the Woman on a Mission to Help Homeless and High-Risk Girls Thrive

Empowering girls and young women is of great importance as it not only helps build resilience but also helps in discovering untapped talents. Girls and young women face unique challenges, and it is vital to provide them with opportunities that allow them to reach their full potential. One individual who has dedicated her life to this cause is Amanda (Amy) L. Good, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Alternatives For Girls.

Ms. Good has 30 years of experience managing and directing human services programs serving children and families in Detroit. She directed a child abuse and neglect program before participating in the grassroots effort that created Alternatives For Girls in 1987. Under her leadership, Alternatives For Girls has grown from a volunteer-led project to a full-service human service agency serving homeless and high-risk girls and young women, along with their families, through street outreach, emergency shelter, transition to independent living, and prevention services.

Ms. Good’s passion for empowering girls and young women is evident in her work at Alternatives For Girls. She believes in providing a safe environment for young women to explore and access the support, resources, and opportunities necessary to be safe, grow strong, and make positive life choices. The agency provides safe shelter, crisis support, awareness and prevention programs, counseling and life skills training, and more.

Ms. Good’s dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed, and she has received several awards. She has received the Leadership Detroit “Leadership Challenge” award, the Executive Director of the Year award from United Way Community Services, and Oprah Winfrey’s “Use Your Life” Angel Network award. Her book, “Alternatives For Girls: A Community Development Model for Homeless and High-Risk Girls and Young Women,” was published in the May/June 1992 issue of Children & Youth Services Review.

Empowering girls and young women is essential for their growth and development. Amanda (Amy) L. Good’s work at Alternatives For Girls is an excellent example of how one individual’s efforts can significantly impact young women’s lives. Through her leadership, Alternatives For Girls has helped thousands of girls and young women discover their full potential and make positive life choices. Ms. Good’s passion and dedication to this cause have been recognized and celebrated, and she continues to inspire others to empower and uplift young women.
